The Prince of Wales visits Darwin Initiative project in Transylvania

During a visit to Transylvania in May, The Prince of Wales spent some time at a Darwin Initiative project, ADEPT (Agricultural Development and Environmental Protection in Transylvania). His Royal Highness spoke to journalists in the village of Saschiz, the project centre, about his belief in the importance of the traditional landscapes of Romania and of supporting the small-scale farming communities who live in them, and praised the work of the project. The Prince of Wales's remarks were widely broadcast in Romania.

The area represents one of Europe's most extensive, still-functional medieval lowland ecosystems: broadleaf forests, grasslands rich in wildflowers and associated fauna, in balance with extensive agriculture.

The ADEPT Darwin Project is carrying out field studies in the Tarnava Mare area of Transylvania, establishing protection measures under the EU's Natura 2000 network, and ensuring that good conservation management is linked to benefits for the local people who created these biodiversity-rich landscapes over hundreds of years. The project is co-funded by Orange Romania.
