Project description

Note: the descriptions presented for projects approved before 2008 have been extracted from technical descriptions in project documents and were not originally intended for publication.

Purpose

To ensure that Myanmar fulfils its potential in conserving limestone karst dependent bat species, including globally threatened taxa

Activities

The main goals were to: 1) create a solid group of host-country scientists capable of conducting bat research of international standard; 2) conduct field research on bats in limestone karst areas with the aim of creating a bat database for the use of the scientific community and international conservation agencies, such as IUCN and WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society); and 3) raise the conservation status of bats and limestone karst habitats in the local and international conservation community.

Outputs

A national database of bats from limestone karst areas - for national and international circulation

Action Plan for cave bats and management plans for key karst areas

A core of Myanmar graduates trained in biodiversity survey work

Identification key for Myanmar bats
